چکیده

Accepted 21 May, 2003 Background: Basement membrane alterations are common in malignancies, and they may indicate tumoral aggressiveness. Distinct patterns of tumoral coverage by collagen IV were reported in nodular and aggressive basal-cell carcinomas (BCCs). Differential expressions of a (IV) collagen chains were also shown on frozen sections. The aim of our work was to document the immunohistochemical expression of a1, a3, and a5 (IV) collagen chains in BCC after routine fixation and processing. Methods: The patterns of distribution of a1 (IV), a3 (IV), and a5 (IV) collagen chains were studied in 20 formalin-fixed and paraffinembedded BCCs showing different infiltrative patterns. One trichoblastoma was used as control. Results: In nodular BCCs, the expression of a5 (IV) collagen chain was downregulated and uneven. By contrast, a1 (IV) collagen chain expression was preserved around these tumors similar to the surrounding skin. However, the a1 (IV) collagen chain expression was discontinuous or absent in BCC areas showing an infiltrative pattern of extension. The a3 chain was absent both underneath all BCCs and non-neoplastic skin. Conclusions: The basement membrane alterations around nodular BCCs involved more precisely the a5 (IV) collagen chains. Defects in a1 (IV) collagen chain expression seemed to be associated with a tumoral invasive and infiltrative pattern. The biological significance of these findings is unclear.

Quick Score and H-Score Assessment of P504s (AMACR) Expression in Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC) and Relation with Histologic Grade

Background and Aims: P504S (AMACR) is a mitochondrial enzyme expressed in renal cell carcinoma. Some of immunohistochemical markers in renal cell tumors are independent prognostic factor and show relation with histologic grading. AMACR expression increases with higher histological grading in different tumors; however, in RCC it is not obvious. In this study, we tried to investigate if ...

Value of CD10 Expression in Differentiating Cutaneous Basal from Squamous Cell Carcinomas and Basal Cell Carcinoma from Trichoepithelioma

Background: In addition to the well-defined histological criteria for squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and basal cell carcinoma (BCC), immunohistochemical techniques can be used in difficult cases for their differentiation. As differential diagnosis between trichoepithelioma (TE) and BCC is sometimes difficult for the clinician and the pathologist, CD10 may be a useful marker for definite diagnosi...

The Role of Type IV Collagen in Developing Lens in Mouse Fetuses

Objective(s) Extracellular matrix (ECM) and basement membrane (BM) play important roles in many developmental processes during development and after birth. Among the components of the BM, collagen fibers specially type IV are the most important parts. The aim of this study was to determine the time when collagen type IV appears in the BM of lens structure during mouse embryonic development. M...
